Conflict · Strait of Hormuz, Persian Gulf · since 28 Feb 2026 · day 228
The strait remains largely closed by Iran and the US blockade of Iranian ports continues; Iran calls the US reply to its seven conditions insufficient while saying it is still reviewing it. Ships are struck nearly every day, and the Houthi attacks on Riyadh's airport, 12 dead on 10 October by Saudi count, have widened the war.
Confirmed: CENTCOM disabled a cargo ship running the blockade on 10 October and counts four vessels disabled, 135 turned around and 10 IRGC-linked tankers destroyed since 14 July; UKMTO recorded an outbound tanker struck inside the strait at 1200 UTC on 11 October and a tanker hit by a drone at Sohar, with traffic still about 75 percent below pre-conflict levels; Saudi Arabia's GACA says the 10 October attack on Riyadh's King Khalid airport killed 12 people, one a US citizen, and wounded 309, a further attack on 11 October killed one and injured 11, and Dammam's airport was also hit; Riyadh's airport is closed. Not confirmed: the content of Iran's seven conditions or what the US accepted; who struck most of the ships hit this month; whether the US joins Saudi strikes on the Houthis, which Trump says it may. What the authorities advise: CENTCOM tells mariners to heed blockade warnings, monitor Notice to Mariners and call channel 16; UKMTO tells vessels to transit with caution; the US Mission in Riyadh recommends avoiding King Khalid airport and the FAA tells US airlines to use caution over Saudi Arabia. US regular gasoline averaged $4.354 a gallon on 5 October per the EIA; the next weekly figure is due 13 or 14 October.

Health · Democratic Republic of the Congo, with one imported case in Kenya and evacuated patients in Europe · since 5 May 2026 · day 161
The DRC's largest Ebola outbreak is in its fifth month: 8,978 confirmed cases and 4,336 deaths to 10 October, across 65 of 167 health zones in seven provinces. Kenya's first imported case died in Nairobi on 5 October; its contacts are in quarantine with no symptoms so far, and every suspected case since has tested negative.
Confirmed: the DRC Ministry of Public Health counts 8,978 confirmed cases including 4,336 deaths to 10 October, with 945 patients in isolation and 2,356 recovered (ECDC, 12 October); Kenya's first imported case, a Kenyan citizen who flew from Kampala to Nairobi on 3 October, died on the night of 5 October; Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale said on 11 October that all 122 listed contacts are verified, 108 are in quarantine and none has developed symptoms, and that of 293 samples tested from 289 alerts only the one case was positive (The Star, 11 October; ECDC, 12 October), while the WHO's Kenya office gives 127 contacts listed and 94 in quarantine (WHO Africa, 12 October); Uganda's outbreak of 20 cases is over; the WHO's emergency declaration of 17 May still stands. Not confirmed: whether any contact in Kenya is infected, with the 21-day window running to late October; whether the slowing seen in parts of Ituri holds while North Kivu grows; whether the Ervebo vaccine protects against Bundibugyo virus, which a trial the WHO expects to start this month is meant to answer. What the authorities advise: the WHO advises against any restriction of travel to, or trade with, the DRC, Uganda or Kenya; the US CDC puts the risk to the general US population at low and the likelihood of Ebola spreading to the United States at very low; the CDC continued its entry order on 11 October for another 30 days, so US entry for anyone who was in the DRC in the past 21 days stays suspended, US citizens arriving from Uganda or South Sudan enter through Washington Dulles, Atlanta or JFK for screening and 21 days of health monitoring, and Kenya is not covered by the order.
